Pipelines are built in calm periods and spent in urgent ones. Organisations that invest early hire faster and better.
Most hiring becomes urgent at the moment it becomes visible: a resignation, a new contract, an approved growth plan. Organisations that only begin searching at that point pay for the delay in both time and compromise.
What a pipeline actually is
A pipeline is not a database of résumés. It is a set of professional relationships with people who are relevant to roles you expect to have, maintained with honest, low-pressure contact.
- A defined view of the roles you will need in the next twelve months
- Mapped talent pools by function, level, and location
- Periodic, genuine contact rather than mass outreach
- Accurate notes on availability, motivation, and expectations
- A clear route from interest to a live process when a role opens
Measure it properly
Track time from role approval to shortlist, and the proportion of shortlists drawn from existing relationships. Those two numbers show whether the pipeline is real or simply a list.
